This blog captures my adventures of becoming a Big Brother to a wonderful 7-yr old boy named Hunter.  My  own adventure began almost 28 years ago, when I became a Little Brother myself.

Boston BIG - A blog about being a Big Brother

This is a blog about my experiences become a Big Brother to a wonderful 7-yr old boy named Hunter.

My name is Allen, and I am a Boston BIG.  I live in the Boston area, and am a BIG Brother (Big Brother Big Sister of Massachusetts Bay Organization) to a 7-year old boy named Hunter.  Hunter lives with his  grandma and 4 siblings, and is in kind of a tough situation.  So, I am a positive adult role-model in his life.  I take him out about 3 times per month.  We have a blast.

People are often surprised by how much fun Hunter and I have on our many outings, so I decided to write this blog to capture some of our adventures, and to keep somewhat of a diary for Hunter.

I personally know how beneficial having a BIG is.  I actually got my own BIG about 28 years ago, when my mother realized that her sons needed help.  My BIG, Paul, became my mentor and guiding light as I grew from a Boston troubled teen into a Stanford alum and business owner.  I talk to Paul almost every week nowadays.  Eventhough I have a wonderful 8 year-old daughter of my own, and run a start-up, I find a few hours each week to take Hunter out.  In fact, it is just as much a break for me as it is for him.

I hope you enjoy reading about some of our adventures.

Hunter and I went to the New England Aquarium today, with BBBS discounted tickets.  This was our first outing since the wedding 3 weeks ago.  So, it gave us a chance to chat about the wedding, and about how happy I was that Hunter was a part of it.

We took the MBTA in, and pretty much goofed off the whole way.  I did not know how much Hunter likes penguins, but I learned.  So, we spent a good deal of time looking at them.  Watching them talk to each other, swim, poop, and occasionally snap at each other.  Then we made our way up to the top of the giant tank, and watched some Aquarium workers feed the giant sea turtles, and I’m sure everyone there was thinking…”dude”.  I was. (Finding Nemo reference)

Afterwards, we needed food.  Hunter, however, may just be the world’s pickiest eater.  He pretty much only likes McDonalds and Burger King.  I like neither.  I’m more into vegetables and lean proteins.  This makes deciding lunch difficult sometimes.  I’ve been slowly trying to introduce Hunter to more vegetables and fruits, but we still have a long way to go.  So, after the Aquarium, he conceded to pizza…Bertucci’s.  It was a disaster.

We had a fun spitball fight while waiting for the pizza, but when the pizza came, Hunter closed his mouth and would not open it.  No food in.  Not even a teeny tiny piece.  Nothing.  He simply didn’t like the way the pizza looked.  Despite my pleas, he wouldn't budge.  I ate one slice, and (I am ashamed to admit this…) threw away the rest.  Even the staff were surprised (disgusted?).  I got the guilt-trip eyes from our waitress.

We hopped on a train, and headed back home.  Hunter was hungry, and I realized that I should have taken the pizza to go, and given it to someone on the street.  But, we still had a great time.  On the train, we tested each other on multiplication problems.  He showed me a video game, and we laughed and laughed.
